The Pronunciation Exercise is a self-assessment activity in the LanGeek mobile app that helps you practice saying words out loud, listen to your own pronunciation, compare it with the correct pronunciation, and decide whether you need more practice.

This exercise is designed to help you become more aware of how you pronounce each word. Instead of only recognizing the word by sight, meaning, or image, you actively pronounce it and evaluate your own speaking accuracy.

Availability

The Pronunciation Exercise is a Premium feature. It is currently available only in the LanGeek mobile app and is not available on the LanGeek website.

To use this feature, you need:

  • The LanGeek mobile app
  • An active Premium subscription
  • Microphone or recording permission enabled on your device

Microphone Permission

Since the Pronunciation Exercise records your voice, you need to allow LanGeek to access your device microphone.

When you start using the feature, your device may ask for microphone or recording permission. You must allow this permission before you can record your pronunciation.

If you previously denied microphone access, you can enable it from your device settings.

How the Pronunciation Exercise Works

In the Pronunciation Exercise, you see a word together with its image. You then record yourself pronouncing the word and review the recording before moving to the self-assessment step.

  1. Look at the word and its image.
  2. Tap the recording button and pronounce the word.
  3. Listen to your recorded pronunciation.
  4. If the recording is clear and saved correctly, tap the approve button.
  5. The card flips and shows more pronunciation information.
  6. Listen to the correct pronunciation of the word.
  7. Listen to your own recorded pronunciation again.
  8. Compare your pronunciation with the correct pronunciation.
  9. Choose whether you pronounced the word correctly or incorrectly.

Reviewing Your Recording

Before you approve your recording, you can listen to it. This lets you check whether your voice was recorded clearly and completely.

If the recording is not clear, you can record the word again. If the recording sounds correct and complete, tap the approve button to continue.

What You See After Approving Your Recording

After you approve your recording, the card flips to the other side. On this side, you can review several pronunciation tools that help you compare your pronunciation with the correct one.

Correct Pronunciation

You can listen to the correct pronunciation of the word. This helps you understand how the word should sound.

Your Pronunciation

You can also listen to your own recorded pronunciation. By comparing your recording with the correct pronunciation, you can notice differences in sounds, stress, rhythm, or syllable pronunciation.

IPA Pronunciation

The IPA pronunciation shows the word using the International Phonetic Alphabet. This gives you a more precise view of the sounds used in the word.

Syllabified Form in PhonoMap

The syllabified form shows how the word is divided into syllables in PhonoMap. This can help you understand the structure and rhythm of the word more clearly.

Self-Assessment

After listening to both the correct pronunciation and your own recording, you decide whether you pronounced the word correctly.

Marking a Word as Correct

Choose the check mark if you think your pronunciation was correct.

When you mark a word as correct, it is removed from the current practice cycle.

Marking a Word as Incorrect

Choose the cross mark if you think your pronunciation needs more practice.

When you mark a word as incorrect, it goes to the end of the pile. It will be shown again after you practice the other words.

How the Practice Cycle Continues

The Pronunciation Exercise continues until all words are removed from the pile.

Words marked as correct leave the cycle. Words marked as incorrect stay in the cycle and appear again later. This allows you to repeat difficult words until you feel more confident with your pronunciation.

Why Use the Pronunciation Exercise?

The Pronunciation Exercise can help you:

  • Practice speaking actively
  • Compare your pronunciation with the correct pronunciation
  • Notice pronunciation mistakes more easily
  • Improve your awareness of word stress and syllables
  • Review IPA pronunciation and PhonoMap syllables
  • Repeat difficult words until you pronounce them more confidently

This feature is useful for learners who want to move beyond listening and reading practice and actively improve their spoken pronunciation.
